The 2019 Hawaii A Cappella Academy for high school-aged singers (and 2019 high school graduates) will be held on Saturday, June 8, and Sunday, June 9, 2019, and we're excited to announce that this year's academy will be open to young women as well as young men! We are collaborating with our sister choruses, Honolulu Blend and Na Leo Lani, and as visiting clinicians and performers we will have not only the sensational world champion men's quartet Vocal Spectrum but also a fabulously exciting top women's quartet, GQ.
Musical directors for the event will be Sounds of Aloha Musical Director Mark Conching and GQ's Katie Gillis. Rehearsals will be held all day on Saturday, June 8, at the music department of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and then on Sunday, June 9, from noon to 6:00 p.m. at the Hawaii Theatre, followed by a public concert at the theatre 6:00 p.m. We are grateful for the generous support of these outstanding venues and their benefactors for making this special event possible.
Participants will receive sheet music and audio learning tracks prior to the festival. Lunch on Saturday and dinner on Sunday will be provided, as well as T-shirts. The cost is $30.00 per student. To register online, click below!
The Sounds of Aloha Chorus organized the first Hawaii Honors A Cappella Academy for high school- and college-aged male singers in 2014. That event also featured Vocal Spectrum, which as a result of several appearances at Sounds of Aloha events over the years has developed a strong local following. You also can read about the 2015 A Cappella Academy, featuring another awesome world champion quartet, OCTimes, and pictured above, on this page.
