The 2022 A Cappella Academy for Hawaii high school aged singers will be held on Saturday, May 7, as part of the Sounds of Aloha Annual Show! Hosted by the Sounds of Aloha Chorus, Honolulu Blend Show Chorus, and Na Leo Lani, the A Cappella Academy brings together young men and women for a short but intense workshop where they learn and rehearse a few a cappella songs and then perform them live on stage for an audience. This will be the first Academy we've been able to hold since our electrifying 2019 event.

This year's A Cappella Academy will culminate in a performance at the Hawaii Theatre as part of the Sounds of Aloha Chorus (SOA) Annual Show at 7:32 p.m., which this year is an original musical western melodrama, "Rhinestone Rides Again!"  Joining SOA Musical Director Mark Conching in presenting the youth workshop will be a all-star lineup of visiting clinicians:

  • Bonnie McKibben, international barbershop quartet champion with the quartet Panache, former SOA Musical Director, and currently a jazz and rock singer and director of two California choruses: the women's chorus OC Sound of Laguna Beach and the mixed chorus Pacific Coast Harmony of La Jolla;
  • Tim Waurick, international barbershop quartet champion with Vocal Spectrum, who were past A Cappella Academy guest clinicians, and a solo recording artist; and
  • The fabulous international championship quartet OC Times, who also will be featured guest performers on the Sounds of Aloha's Annual Show.

Participating singers will receive sheet music and audio learning tracks for a song they will sing with the chorus in the second half of the show, which is a concert. They'll also receive a commemorative T-shirt and a bento dinner. Thanks to generous support of Harmony Foundation International, Inc., the Association of International Quartet Champions, and the Atherton Family Foundation, this event is free to participating students.
