There are several steps to becoming a member of the Aloha Chapter:

  1. You should attend at least three chapter meetings/chorus rehearsals before applying for membership. Becoming a member requires a great deal of commitment. We want you to know as much about our hobby as possible before making that commitment. Once you have made your decision, ask the Vice President for Chapter Development for an application form and he will explain the procedure.
  1. Have a voice placement meeting with the Musical Director or, at his direction, by one of the Assistant Directors or Section Leaders. This will help determine which part your voice is best suited for and will give the Director an idea of your "ear-voice" coordination. The voice placement will include several things: singing a simple tune like Happy Birthday; matching your voice to a note blown on a pitch pipe; singing the chromatic scale (do, re, me, etc.). The Director will discuss with you the voice part for which he feels you are best suited. In the rare instance, that an applicant is tone deaf and is unable to sing the notes blown on the pitch pipe or carry a tune in a reasonable manner, the Director will ask a second director to evaluate the applicant. If both men agree that the applicant can not meet minimum standards and that his voice is not trainable, they will notify the Chapter Development VP and the applicant will be offered non-singing membership status, if he so desires. There are many non-singing roles a chapter member can fill while enjoying the fellowship of our group.
  2. Once the voice placement is successfully concluded, complete the application form and return it to the Chapter Development VP together with a check for the first years dues. Currently, the initial dues are $136.50. Your check should be payable to the Barbershop Harmony Society. You will be invoiced annually, on your anniversary date. Currently, the annual dues, after the first year, are $126.50. Check with the Chapter Development VP on payment plans.
  3. Once you have completed the above requirements, your application will be recommended to the Aloha Chapter Board of Directors for approval. Once approved, the application will be forwarded to the Barbershop Society headquarters in Kenosha, Wisconsin for processing. In two to three weeks you will receive a membership certificate, membership card, lapel pin and Aloha Chapter name tag.

You’re as welcome as the flowers in May.

Becoming a Member of The Sounds Of Aloha Chorus

The Sounds of Aloha Chorus is the performing chorus of the Aloha Chapter. Simply becoming a member of the Aloha Chapter does not automatically qualify you to perform with the Sounds Of Aloha Chorus in public performances. To qualify for the chorus you must accomplish the following:

  1. Be able to sing accurate notes and words to each song in the chorus performance repertoire. This competence will be judged by the Section Leader of your voice part.
  2. Be able to demonstrate competence in the stage presence moves required for each song. This will be judged by the Musical Director and/or the stage presence coach.
  3. Submit tapes of your voice singing specific songs during chorus rehearsal when directed by the Music Committee. These tapes are used by the Section Leaders for educational purposes and improvement critique; they are not audition, qualification or pass/fail tapes.
  4. Be in attendance at 75% of chorus rehearsals within 5 months of the spring show and strive for 100% attendance the month preceding the show or Far Western District contest.
  5. Wear the authorized chorus uniform in a clean and pressed condition.
  6. Arrive at the appointed time and place for a performance ready to warmup and perform.
  7. Give your absolute best effort to sing well and look like you enjoy it!
