The 2019 Hawaii A Cappella Academy for high school-aged singers (including 2019 high school graduates and this year's eighth-gradeers!) will be held on Saturday, June 8, and Sunday, June 9, 2019, and we're excited to announce that this year's academy will be open to young women as well as young men! We are collaborating with our sister choruses, Honolulu Blend and Na Leo Lani, and as visiting clinicians and performers we will have not only the sensational world champion men's quartet Vocal Spectrum but also a fabulously exciting top women's quartet, GQ. You owe it to yourself to take a couple of minutes to see what we are talking about, by clicking here and here.
Musical directors for the event will be Sounds of Aloha Musical Director Mark Conching and GQ's Katie Gillis. Listen to Mark talk about the event on Hawaii Public Radio by clicking here and scrolling down the story on the A Cappella Academy. Rehearsals will be held all day on Saturday, June 8, at the music department of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and then on Sunday, June 9, from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Hawaii Theatre, followed by a public concert at the theatre 6:00 p.m. We are grateful for the support of these outstanding venues and their benefactors for making this special event possible.
Participants will receive sheet music and audio learning tracks prior to the festival. Lunch on Saturday and dinner on Sunday will be provided, as well as T-shirts. Thanks to grants from generous funders, the cost is only $30 per student. To register online, click below! You also can contact us at [email protected] or call us at (808) 262-SONG (7664).
The Saturday evening concert will feature some songs sung by the boys, some sung by the girls, some together, and, of course, performances by Vocal Spectrum and GQ. Tickets are only $15, which includes $5 to help preserve the beautiful theatre and is an incredible value to hear this level of internationally acclaimed talent, and kids from across Oahu, in Hawaii's foremost performance venue! The Sounds of Aloha Chorus organized the first Hawaii Honors A Cappella Academy for high school- and college-aged male singers in 2014. That event also featured Vocal Spectrum, which as a result of several appearances at Sounds of Aloha events over the years has developed a strong local following. You also can read about the 2015 A Cappella Academy, which featured another awesome world champion quartet, OCTimes, and is pictured above, on this page. And here are video messages from Vocal Spectrum and GQ to this year's participants!
We know people are busy this time of year, but the clock is ticking on this amazing opportunity, so please help us spread the word to students, parents, and teachers!
