The Sounds of Aloha Chorus organized the first Hawaii Honors A Cappella Academy for high school- and college-aged male singers in 2014. Participation in this program is limited, and participating students need to be approved by their music educator, with a voice placement evaluation required. The participants receive sheet music and audio learning tracks prior to the festival, and typically rehearse on a Friday evening and on Saturday and then perform a free pubic concert on Saturday evening.
In 2014 and 2015 the clinicians were Sounds of Aloha Chorus Musical Director Mark Conching and a visiting world-class barbershop quartet, and the event was held at the Orvis Auditorium at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. The clinic was offered for nominal fee in 2014 and was entirely free in 2015. Lunch and dinner on Saturday were provided.
The 2014 A Cappella Academy featured the world champion quartet Vocal Spectrum, which as a result of several appearances in recent years at SOA events has developed a strong local following.
