Plans are underway for the 2019 A Cappella Academy! More details to follow, but so far we know it will be held on the weekend of June 8, 2019. And we are especially excited that this year's event will be open to young women as well as young men. We are collaborating with our sister choruses, Honolulu Blend and Na Leo Lani, and as visiting clinicians we will have not only the sensational world champion quartet Vocal Spectrum but also a fabulous top women's quartet!
The Sounds of Aloha Chorus organized the first Hawaii Honors A Cappella Academy for high school- and college-aged male singers in 2014. Participation in this program is limited, and participating students need to be approved by their music educator, with a voice placement evaluation required. The participants receive sheet music and audio learning tracks prior to the festival, and they typically rehearse on a Friday evening and on Saturday and then perform a free public concert on Saturday evening. There is likely to be a nominal fee. Lunch and dinner on Saturday likely will be provided.
Past A Cappella Academies were held at the Orvis Auditorium at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, although the location of this year's event still is being arranged. The 2014 A Cappella Academy featured Vocal Spectrum, which as a result of several appearances at SOA events has developed a strong local following. You can read about the 2015 A Cappella Academy, featuring world champion quartet OCTimes and pictured here, on this page.
