The Sounds of Aloha Chorus periodically holds A Cappella Academies for high school- and sometimes college-aged singers, most recently in 2014, 2015, and 2019. The 2014 and 2015 Academies were for young men, but we collaborated on the 2019 A Cappella Academy with our sister choruses, Honolulu Blend and Na Leo Lani, to open the event to young women as well. As visiting clinicians and performers, we brought in not only the sensational world champion men's quartet Vocal Spectrum but also a fabulously exciting top women's quartet, GQ.
Participating students typically receive sheet music and audio learning tracks to some a cappella songs, and after only a day and a half of coaching and rehearsing over a weekend give a live public performance that also features the guest group(s). In the past the program has been offered for a nominal fee, with meals, T-shirts, and two tickets for families and friends included.
Coverage of the 2019 A Cappella Academy by Hawaii Public Radio is available by clicking here and scrolling down to the story on the A Cappella Academy, and you can watch two KHON2 News television segments here and here.
We are excited to announce that we will be holding the 2022 A Cappella Academy on May 7, and participants will sing on the Sounds of Aloha Annual Show, this year a musical melodrama called "Rhinestone Rides Again!" at the historic Hawaii Theatre starting at 7:32 p.m.!
Please help spread the word to any young singers and music teachers you know about this fabulous event. If you are a young singer or a music teacher and would like to be added to our contact list, please contact us or add yourself to our online list on our Contacts page!
